Civil Disobedience (시민 불복종)

I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right. 우리는 먼저 인간이어야 하고, 그 다음에 국민이어야 한다고 나는 생각한다. 법에 대한 존경심보다는 먼저 정의에 대한 존경심을 기르는 것이 바람직하다. 내가 떠맡을 권리가 있는 유일한 책무는, 어떤 때이고 간에 내가 옳다고 생각하는 일을 행하는 일이다.   Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents on injustice. 법이 사람들을 조금이라도 더 정의로운 인간으로 만든 적은 없다. 오히려 법에 대한 존경심 때문에 선량한 사람들 조차도 매일 옳지않은 일의 하수인이 되고 있다. The state never intentionally confronts a man's sense, intellectual or moral, but only his body, his senses. It is not armed with superior wit or honesty, but with superior physical strength. I was not born to be forced. I will breathe after my own fashion. Let us see who is the strongest. What force has a multitude? They only can force me who obey a higher law than I. They force me to become like themselves. I do not hear of men being forced to live this way or that by masses of men. What sort of life were that to live?   국가는 한 인간의 지식이나 양심을 상대하려는 의도는 결코 보이지 않고 오직 그의 육체와 감각만을 상대하려고 한다. 그것은 최고의 지성이나 정직성으로 무장하지 않고 강력한 물리적 힘으로 무장한다. 나는 누구에게 강요받기 위하여 이 세상에 태어난 것이 아니다. 나는 내 양식대로 숨을 쉬며 살아갈 것이다. 누가 더 강한지는 두고보도록 하자. 다수가 가진 힘은 어떤 힘인가? 내가 지키는 법보다 더 숭고한 법을 지키는 사람들만이 나에게 뭔가 강요할 수 있다. 이 사람들은 내가 자신들과 같은 사람이 되라고 강요한다. 나는 참다운 인간들이 군중의 강요를 받아 이렇게 또는 저렇게 살았다는 말을 들은 적이 없다. 그런 식의 삶이 도대체 어떤 삶이겠는가?
