On Children - Kahlil Gibran -         Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable. 아이들에 관하여 -칼릴 지브란 -     당신들의 아이라고 해서 그대들의 아이인 것은 아니다. 그들은 스스로 갈망하는 삶을 가진  딸이요 아들이다. 아이들은 당신을 통해서 왔지만 당신으로부터 온것은 아니요. 비록 지금 그대들과 함께 있을지라도 아이들이 그대들의 소유인 것은 아니다. 당신들은 아이들에게 사랑을 줄 순 있으나 당신들의 생각까지 줄 수는 없다. 왜냐하면 아이들은 자신들의 생각을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 그대들은 아이들에게 몸을 위한 집을 줄 수는 있으나 영혼의 집마저 줄 순 없다. 왜냐하며 아이들의 영혼은 내일의 집에 살고있기 때문이다. 당신들이 결코 방문할 수 없는, 꿈속에서도 가 볼 수 없는 그곳 말이다. 당신이 아이들 처럼 되려고 애쓸수는 있지만 그들을 당신과 같이 만들려고 하지는 말라 왜냐하면 삶이란 결코 뒤로 되돌아가진 않으며 어제에 머물지도 않기 때문이다. 당신은 그대의 아이들을 날아가는 화살처럼 앞으로 나아가게 하는 활이다. 사수이신 신은 무한의 길 위에 표적을 겨누고 그분의 화살이 보다 빨리, 보다 멀리 날아가도록 그분의 온 힘으로 그대들을 구부리는 것이다. 사수이신 신의 손길로 그대들이 구부러짐을 기뻐하라. 왜냐하면 신은 날아가는 화살을 사랑하시는 만큼 또한 흔들리지 않는 활도 사랑하시기 때문이다.
